Lunch with The Sheriff and Judges
4th April 2023The Old Bailey
Sheriff Andrew Marsden graciously invited me to lunch at The Old Bailey – along with 4 other Masters and where we joined 5 Judges and another guest.
What a treat – especially having just recently bought KC Wendy Joseph’s book “Unlawful Killings” – Wendy being the current Master Pewterers’ and recently retired judge at the Old Bailey – in which she peels apart various dramatic cases she presided over during her time at the Central Criminal Court.
Sheriff Andrew met us in his on-site office (alongside his bedroom for the year), gave us some history of the Old Bailey and the Sheriff’s role (looking after the judges etc), before we were ushered into a lovely lunch with the Judges of the day!
It was wonderful to be seated next to HHJ Richard Marks KC (the Common Serjeant) and to meet HHJ Patrick Field KC whose great grandfather, Winston Field, was prime minister of Rhodesia in the early 1960’s and came from pedigree tobacco farming stock!
After lunch we were invited to listen to a hearing in action Court 9 – I wonder how the jury of 12 will vote!
