Your Eyes - Spectacle Makers Lecture Event

19th May 2025

St Thomas' Hospital

Carolyn and I went to a most interesting event at St Thomas' Hospital, organised by the Spectacle Makers and delivered in the Governers' Hall. Entitled "Your Eyes", it was a series of short lectures related to eyes and eye health, presented by professionals from different parts of the eye health world.

Covering how the eye works, common eye problems, what happens in hospiital eye departments, recent eye healthcare advances, Orthoptology, the business of spectacles and many oither subjects, it covered a lot of ground in a short time.

There were a lot of pictures of eyeballs, many of them malfunctioning, which did provoke a certain amount of queasiness!

However, the lectures were fascinating and delivered by experts who know how to keep your attention!

More importanltly, the very clear message from the evening was the necessity of getting one's eyes tested at least every two years. Not only does this check whether your sight is working correctly but it is possible that other health issues may be flagged up as well.

Do not put off the visit to the Opticians!

We finished with very nice drinks and canapes, surpisingly good for hospital food. I suspect however you would not get this standard if you were an in-patient!
