Livery Consorts Reception
1st April 2025Old Operating Theatre
Having attended many enjoyable Livery consort events, Carolyn felt that she wanted to return the hospitality so we organised a visit to the Old Operating Theatre for other Livery Company Consorts.
OVer 40 consorts and friends joined us at the Science Gallery Cafe at Guys Hospital, just down the road from the Old Operating Theatre. We deliberately made the meeting time well in advance of the tour time, and therefore had time for coffee, breakfast and a long chat, which everybody was very happy with - normally time to get to know each other is limited on these occasions!
We then wandered up the road and climbed the very tight spiral staircase up to the Garret where the museum is situated and sat down in the audience gallery in the actual operating theatre.
We were treated to an extremely lively, interesting but somewhat gruesome explanation of the history of the building and medical practice over the years. Carolyn then volunteered to have her leg cut off to illustrate how things worked in the bad old days.....
We finished by spending some time looking at the exhibits in the museum/herb garret before heading back to the cafe for some late lunch.
Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves and of course we raised some money for Benevolent Fund which is one of the objectives.
The museum is to be congratulated on providing such a greta experience!
