Remembrance Sunday

10th November 2024

St Pauls/Royal Exchange

Along with other Masters and Consorts, we attended the Service of Remembrancee and the Commemoration of the Fallen at St Pauls Cathedral on Remembrance Sunday.

It was a very moving ceremony, with Lessons read by an Honourable Artillery Company Cadet and the new Lord Mayor, and an address by the Canon in Residence, Dr Paula Gooder. As always, the service ends with the Last Post and 2 minutes silence in commeration of the Fallen.

After the service finished, the Masters and their guests processed to the Royal Exchange to watch the laying of wreaths by City representatives including the Lord Mayor, the Master Fruiterer and veterans, all accompanied by a military band playing wonderful, sombre music. We then stood outside the Mansion House to watch the military parade and standards go past.

Feeling the cold, we were lucky enough to be invited back to tea at Saddlers Hall by the Master Fan Maker, whose company has an office there and were shown examples of art work by artists supported by the Fan Makers.

Then on to Luncheon in the Aldermans Dining Room at the Guildhall, for a meal of Marinated Scottish Salmon, Roast Beef and The Old Contemptible British Expeditionary Force Autumn Crumble. The crumble was served in an army mess tin to make it appropriate for Remembrance Sunday, but was none the less a very fine dish!

All in all, a very memorable Remembrance Sunday!
