Burns Supper
2nd February 2024City Livery Club
Given how prolific a writer and a father, Robert (Robbie) Burns was it is surprising to learn that he was only 37 when he died. How telling it was, when he claimed, “I will be more famous in 100 years than I am now”. Burns is celebrated annually around his birthday, which is January 25th. This year, Court Assistant Flora Okereke and my friend, Jan York from North Carolina joined the festivities on February 2nd, Flora’s significant birthday, at The Little Ship Club with fellow City Livery Club members. The toasts flowed for Burns and Flora as did the whisky and champagne. The haggis was piped in and was delicious! So were the tatties and neeps , which were part of the main course served with roast beef. Alderman Professor Emma Edhem delivered an exceptional reply from the lasses. The fiddler was in fine form and watching her fingers moved was entrancing. Burn’s most notable (to me) poem: Aung Lang Syne was saved until last. By then we three Cinderellas had made our way in our carriage. Thank you Philippa Stary for arranging such a fun celebration for Burns and Flora!!
