Now that you are 40
I am here to let you know
That life begins from this day on
It's now your time to grow
So take a breath and spread your wings
Embrace this special day
And look back only fleetingly
At life along the way
This poem befits The Guild of Young Freemen whose membership literally ages out at 40. But, they certainly make the most of their membership until then and I suspect will look back more than fleetingly! Young Freemen enjoy benefits not dissimilar to Livery Companies, including:
Fellowship - Members of the Guild have access to a diverse and interesting network of young professionals who share a passion for the City of London, as well as the chance to meet and network with the Livery Companies.
Charity - Supporting the Lord Mayor's Appeal and "Master's Charity", members are offered a broad range of opportunities to give their time and energy for good causes.
Civic - Membership provides unique opportunities for direct participation in civic life from charity pancake races to the world's oldest and longest civic procession, which is also nationally televised by the BBC.
Education - An unparalleled chance to learn City history by living it, membership opens the door to a rich and diverse world of ancient Guilds and modern mythology stretching back long before the Magna Carta.
Master Sam Chadd and his fabulous wife, Katharine are stalwarts at all City events. They are eager participants in every activity and tirelessly seek the perfect Livery Company for their members. Fortunately they have some incredible advisors. At their annual Livery Banquet, which I was thrilled to attend with my son-in-law, Patrick, Alderman Tim Hailes was recognised for his commendable service as the President of the Guild. The baton quickly passed to Alderman Alastair King, who recently finished his term as Aldermanic Sheriff. No doubt Alastair and his fiancé, Florence will bring their own magic to the role.
Alderman Sir Andrew Parmley gave a brilliant Toast from the Guests. His ability as a raconteur is unparalleled. He was in fine form and an amazing representative on behalf of the Lord Mayor. Sam spoke of the very first time he entered The Barber Surgeons’ Hall - to give blood. Lying on the reclining chair, staring at the beautiful ceiling, gave him an appreciation for Livery Halls and definitely illustrated his charitable nature. Appropriately the Master Woolman was present. The Guild of Young Freemen are instrumental in the annual Sheep Drive. In fact there were several Masters and Immediate Past Masters in attendance. This is a testament to the diversity of the Guild, their interests and the Liveries they choose to join. It is also a validation of how great a Master Sam is. He spoke eloquently about the Guild, their successes and their ambitions. He was humorous, generous, passionate and tenacious. Today he is Master of the Guild of Young Freemen; but, after he turns 40...
