Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers’ Livery Banquet
13th October 2023Guildhall
Many years ago, I reserved Guildhall for a special dinner. Trust me it was not easy and I will always be grateful to those who helped me! Unlike most contracts, with a force majeure covering bad weather, burst pipes, or pestilence. Guildhall’s small print included the caveat that if the Queen wants the Guildhall, I am out. I truly did not think that would happen. How wrong I was! You may remember the President of China’s State visit complete with a magnificent State dinner at the Guildhall….
Fortunately the King did not ‘bump’ this special anniversary Banquet. The Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers Dinner enabled me to experience the splendour of Guildhall at night. Their Master, Catherine Carr is exceptional in so many ways and her joie de vivre was evident throughout. Celebrating their 400 year birthday with a historical exhibition in the Guildhall Gallery offered a hint of blending old and new together in a spectacularly unique way. There were alter cloths, a royal wedding dress, jewellery and fashion, and military regalia to name but a few of the finest displays of embroidery in one place. This was truly a wonderful tribute to their craft. After the gong sounded, over 350 Masters and guests made their way to the Guildhall where candlelight flickered and glowed on ancient statues and the ceiling and reminded us of all those who had dined before us. The Lord and Lady Mayoress processed in with Catherine, who wore a magnificent hat made especially for this occasion by one of her Liverymen. A hat that was worthy of inclusion in the exhibition. The Lord Mayor congratulated the Company on their notable birthday and special contributions and accomplishments. Principal Guest, Rob Rinder, spoke of Livery Companies and their role as charitable supporters. Caterer Mark Grove and his team outdid themselves ensuring a fine meal was enjoyed by all. As the carriages arrived and our dazzling evening came to an end, Catherine continued to sparkle and was every bit the Queen of the night.
