Goldsmiths’ Fair

26th September 2023

Goldsmiths’ Hall

I am like a magpie, I love bright shiny objects. I am drawn to them like a moth to a flame, making the Goldsmiths' Fair an idyllic place for my Consort, Courtney and I to spend a blissful few hours. My thanks to the Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths for his hospitality and the opportunity to visit the first night of the fair. It was a pleasure to see Past Master Michael Prideaux and his wife, Sue at the champagne reception. I did ask Michael if he could arrange for the fair to not be the day after Courtney’s Birthday. Alas, he merely shook his head.

For more than four decades, Goldsmiths’ Fair has brought together a selection of the UK’s best contemporary jewellers and silversmiths. This year’s 136 exhibitors worked across disciplines and materials, each achieving distinct techniques and their own style with precious metals.

The Fair gives visitors the opportunity to buy directly from makers and to discuss their skills, practices and inspiration. Courtney and I found it fascinating to meet designers whose personalities were as varied as the pieces on display. There was a Mother / Daughter team - like us, an amazing French woman who made divine cat earrings. An Australian whose pearls hailed from her homeland. There were sophisticated pieces, urban jewels, and comfortable every day staples all glistening in their glass cases calling my name! I bought a pair of black textured earrings that were made by a man who is a member of the Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers’ Livery Company.

I have enough jewellery - SAID NO ONE, EVER!

At least no one who attended the Goldsmiths' Fair!!!
