2023 City Giving Day Breakfast

5th September 2023

Mansion House

No one should underestimate the importance of The Lord Mayor’s Appeal or City Giving Day. For the charity partners, these funds are literally life changing. A tremendous amount of effort goes into encouraging businesses, Livery Companies and individuals within the City to unite in the common goal of raising vast amounts of money for the Lord Mayor’s charities and other worthy causes. In the run up to the big day, I attended two breakfasts. The atmosphere was not dissimilar to a pep rally - with purpose. Officially on 12thSeptember, the day was marked by infinite amounts of charitable activities and events. However, if you missed the occasion do not worry, the online auction will only close at the end of the City Giving Day Thank You Reception on 31stOctober. Additionally, there will be a balloon regatta on 22ndOctober and the Grand Finale Dinner on 2nd November. Below is a synopsis of the main recipients of this year’s funds. National Numeracy - Building the nation's number confidence and skills
Our partnership will fund a new initiative with National Numeracy – ‘Every Londoner Counts’ – which will help improve employability and financial inclusion by supporting thousands of Londoners in greatest need to build confidence, skills and positive attitudes to basic numeracy through a network of 500 newly-trained Numeracy Champions.

MQ Mental Health Research – Ground-breaking mental health research
Our partnership with MQ will initially enable new research into the impact of the cost of living crisis on the nation’s mental health and produce new recommendations on how we can support the most vulnerable in society. This work will engage stakeholders and communities across the UK to gather their experiences and concerns as this crisis deepens. Coupled with research on suicide, anxiety and depression from MQ's leading scientists; the impact of the research will inform policy and practice, ensuring the UK and the City are ready to support those hardest hit.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award - Life-changing experiences for young people
Our partnership is enabling The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to extend its reach in London, supporting its ambition for a further 10,000 young people to get the chance to undertake and achieve an Award. They will focus on growing provision in areas of deprivation, ensuring that cost isn’t a barrier to accessing what can be a life changing opportunity for young people.
