Arundel Cricket
9th July 2023Arundel Castle Grounds
When I gave my very first toast to the guests, I shall never forget being told afterwards that I had mispronounced Arundel. From that moment, I was determined to visit Arundel Cricket Foundation and learn about this important charity that the Benevolent Fund supports. I had this opportunity as the guest of their Chairman, Peter Bristowe. The sun shined and the rain stayed away as – I Zingari v I Zingari Australia played in a competitive match that ended in a civilised draw. While my experience watching semi professional cricket and exploring the magnificent gardens adjacent to the pitch did not exactly emulate the adventures the visiting students have, it is easy to take the leap and envision the opportunities the Foundation offers.
I met several trustees who described what it is like to watch the inner city children exit the bus in the Castle grounds and feel the grass beneath their feet. They are hosted for several days and given the opportunity to play cricket, make dens, and tour the castle gardens, all while learning about birds, bees and the biosphere. The trustees are passionate about the importance of these visits, not just as an escape from the noise and crowds of the City; but, as an opportunity to learn about the wider world. Many participants have never been away from their immediate environment let alone away from home. They experience independence, team building, and responsibility all in wide open spaces. It is easy to understand the impact these few days have on the lives of these children and their outlook as they read and study the wider world. No doubt the warmth, openness, generosity and hospitality that I received mirrored what each student receives. The acceptance and positivity that stems from such a welcome is just as impactful as the physical and intellectual benefits. As I bid farewell to my amazing hosts, I left with a wonderful lasting impression as well as the correct pronunciation of Arundel!!
