Banquet: Scientific Instrument Makers
19th June 2023Location: The Honourable Artillery Company
The Honourable Artillery Company was established and incorporated with a grant of a Royal Charter by Henry VIII on 25 August1537 "for the better defence of this realm." From the 17th century the Company has been described as a regiment and remains so to this day. It is the oldest regiment in the British Army and, alongside the five Foot Guards regiments, one of few never to have been amalgamated with another.
It was this impressive building steeped in tradition and oozing with regimental splendour that marked my first Banquet as a Visiting Master. A pianist played as we processed into dinner in the Long Room. The Long Room is renowned for its wonderful large windows that flood the room with natural light. We were so fortunate to experience this exquisite room with both the early evening light still seeping through, and in complete darkness outside, with the marvellous chandeliers bouncing light beams over the paintings of Queens and Kings.
Suffused in history and full of charm, the Long Room is one of the most coveted spaces in Armoury House. The beautiful wood-panelled walls and ornate red, gold and white detailing throughout help create a truly impressive space, worthy of the most special of occasions.
The American Flag hung proudly in the corner as a special welcome! The Scientific Instrument Makers were very generous hosts and it was a special treat to meet Philip, Master and Audrey, Mistress so soon after the Masters weekend away in Glasgow.
Their principal guest speaker, The Right Honourable The Lord Willetts, former Minister of State for Universities and Science reminded us of the important role scientific instruments play in our daily life. While minister, he felt his mandate was to continually work to increase funding for the sciences. A remarkable objective, which was met with approval!
While last week seemed to involve music in various forms, this week will focus on the military. More to come…..
