16th June 2023

Drapers’ Hall

A glorious garden awaited us at Drapers’ Hall. Recently renovated, Mulberry trees, magnolias and roses in full bloom were the main features now that the pond has been removed. The arch of roses were breathtaking.

Hospitality abounded as grand company and good food merged to inspire lively conversations under the recently cleaned and brightened paintings on the ceiling. I understand the renovation costs were eye watering. Ever the eagle eye, Sandra spotted this amazing room in the TV series The Diplomat, which we both enjoyed.

With the Master’s weekend away at Glasgow upon us, discussions of activities, weather, attire and transportation abounded. However, my immediate dining partners and I managed to discuss US politics, an interesting conundrum given Trump’s Federal indictment this past week and the opera season!

It was an honour to meet Master Draper, Stuart Shilson LVO DL, who fondly remembers Sandra from their days at St John. Eleven months into his term, he gave an engaging speech before hastening to Buckingham Palace to assist in an Investiture.

It was very nice to meet Amanda Waring, Master Furniture Maker and Christine Cook who has taken over as the Secretary of the Fellowship of Clerks. Master Pewterer, Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC and I had an opportunity to have a proper conversation and Lindy Whitlam, Master of the Makers of Playing Cards was a welcome sight when I arrived. We even managed a pre event photo!
