The Cutlers' Feast Friday

19th May 2023

Sheffield

Off we headed to Sheffield for the 386th Cutlers’ Feast at the invitation of The Master Cutler (The Co of Cutlers in Hallamshire), Dame Julie Kenny, in the magnificent Cutlers’ Hall.

The Mistress and I were amongst some 320 guests, which included 23 Livery Companies, The King’s Remembrancer, the Bishops of Hallam and Sheffield, the President of Boeing UK (who opened their first European production facility in Sheffield 2018), the High Sheriff and Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Commanding Officers of affiliated military units and many other regional great and good!

As one can imagine their Hall displayed much top silverware and cutlery with some very prized pieces.

The Guard of Honour were from The Chestnut Troop (1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery) and music was provided by a String Quartet (A Touch of Class) and Fanfare Trumpeters from The South Yorkshire Police.

We enjoyed much hospitality, very fine foods and wines, and some excellent speeches with:

The Senior Warden Charles Turner challenging the government to get back to loving manufacturing; and giving much credit to his Master for all she’s done.
The President of Boeing UK, Maria Laine, giving much credit to the UK for its encouragement and innovation yet urging it to support the development of skills.
The Master Cutler promoting inclusivity and diversity and pouring out thanks to all who have supported her…and somehow, she found out about the birth of our latest grandson that very evening and publicly announced it – most touching!
A truly wonderful evening hosted by Dame Julie, an impressive lady.

Next year promises to be a big one – their 400th year anniversary!
