St Patrick's Day Parade

17th March 2023

Mons Barracks, Aldershot

As guests of the Irish Guards Association, we received an invitation to a St Patrick’s Day Parade at Mons Barracks (Aldershot) to coincide with the Prince of Wales handing over to the Princess of Wales the role of Colonel of the Regiment, Irish Guards.

It was a real privilege to be present – undeterred by the rather damp and cool conditions.

HRH The Princess presented the traditional sprigs of shamrock to the officers and guardsmen who in turn offered it along the ranks. The couple then met representatives of The Irish Guards Association, including Major Robbie Wilmont and Secretary Ron Kirkland.

HRH The Prince said he was sad to be stepping aside as Col of the Regiment, but stated that in Catherine they had a committed, focused and loyal 11th Colonel!

A memorable hour’s ceremony before joining the bus back to Wellington Barracks (London) and indulging in a lovely curry and Irish stew, Guiness and other bev in the Sergeant’s Mess.

On behalf of us present – IPM and Catherine, Senior Warden, Mistress and Clerk – special thanks to the IGA for including us in the day.
