GOLD MEDAL Competition - Guildhall School of Music & Drama
The Tobacco Pipe Makers have been supporters of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama since the 1950s supporting many singers and musicians in pursuit of their dreams. We enjoy our close relationship with the School and members and their guests took great pleasure on 6th May by attending the annual GOLD MEDAL Competition at Barbican Hall. For over 100 years, the Guildhall School has celebrated its pupils by holding this competition in which, in alternate years, musicians and singers compete for the GOLD MEDAL award. This year it was the turn of the musicians. Supported by the Guildhall Symphony Orchestra, the finalists consisted of two pianists, Antonina Suhanova and Scott MacIsaac, and a harpist, Oliver Wass. The audience was treated to world class performances by each of these three outstandingly talented musicians with music composed by Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and Ginastera respectively. There wasn't a cigarette paper of difference between the competitors, but in the end the award went to Oliver Wass on the harp. Our hearty congratulations go to Oliver and our enthusiastic applause to Antonina and Scott for their sublime performances. It was an evening of great wonders.
