If you had to leave your home today with one suitcase, what would you take?
Imagine that gut-wrenching decision. What treasured possessions, essential documents, or sentimental items would you cram into a single bag, knowing it's all you have left?
This isn't just a hypothetical question for the 354,000 people experiencing homelessness in the UK today. It's a harsh reality faced by families, individuals fleeing violence, refugees, those navigating the justice system, and people actively sleeping on our streets, among many others, every day.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF STORING SOMEONE'S BAG
Street Storage's mission spans beyond storing people's bags. We are dedicated to promoting dignity, stability, and autonomy for those in need by providing a safe, secure space for their personal items. This crucial service allows individuals to focus their energy on accessing vital resources and opportunities that can improve their lives and help them move away from the street through securing employment and housing.
Our service significantly reduces the risk of physical health issues caused by the constant strain of carrying heavy weight. It also removes the agonising judgement doled out by passers by as well as the relentless worry of someone's personal belongings being stolen or destroyed – a huge relief, and one that we consider a human right.
NOT JUST A STORAGE UNIT
Our warm and friendly team of staff and volunteers foster an inviting community spirit, treating every person who uses our service with respect and individuality. Alongside our secure baggage storage, we offer a welcoming room and two additional community spaces where people can truly relax and sort through their belongings. People can use our computers, charge their phones, or simply rest. Our offices operate an open-door policy, meaning we're always happy to speak if someone needs to talk. We provide one-to-one support whenever we can, aiming to be a reliable and pivotal service that people can turn to when they feel everywhere else has given up on them.
