John J Adler MBE JP

1982 - 1983

John James Adler (1935-2017). MBE (2008). Knighted in Germany Ritter of Miltenberg for his work in the pipe-making industry.

Chairman and Managing Director of the family business, A Oppenheimer & Co Ltd, general merchants (est 1860), manufacturers and distributors of briar smoking pipes amongst other trade lines, including engineering, textiles and safety equipment. A member of the L'Académie Internationale de la Pipe and of the Confrérie des Maîtres-Pipiers; President of the Briar Pipe Trade Association. Elder son of the first Master of our Company, Alan L Adler.

Chairman (twice) of the Tobacco Trade Benevolent Association and Chairman of the Company’s Benevolent Fund.

Parts of John’s world-famous collection of meerschaum, briar, porcelain and glass pipes and catalogues were gifted to the National Pipe Archive at the University of Liverpool.
