The Revival
Tobacco Leaf

1954 onwards

On 24 March 1954, prominent members of the Briar Pipe and Tobacco Trades met to revive the old Company, a constitution was drawn up, and breaking with past tradition by the inclusion of the Tobacco trade, the name was changed to "Company of Tobacco Pipe Makers and Tobacco Blenders". A Master, four Wardens, twenty Assistants and a Clerk were appointed. Meetings were held each quarter, observing the same days as the original Company.

In 1956, a Grant of Arms was made by the College of Arms, the design being based on the old Company with the motto "Producat Terra". A plea for Livery was presented in January 1960 to the Court of Aldermen and accepted in December of that year. Following the revival of the Company, a period of consolidation followed, laying sound foundation for the future. In 1959, an appeal was launched to raise funds for Charity, and as a result, a Benevolent Fund was set up with the main object of furthering education.

A number of schools were considered, the eventual choice being Sevenoaks School which already had an historical connection to the City, having been endowed by a foundling and former Lord Mayor, Bill Sennocke (or Sevenoaks) in the 15th Century. He was named after the village, became a confidant of Henry V and fought with him at Agincourt. Active support from the Company began in 1963 by the foundation of three scholarships, and subsequent language and biology laboratories were equipped by the Benevolent Fund. Close links have been established with the School since that time and by 1994, 22 pupils per year have benefited from the scholarships provided, with other projects receiving donations from the fund.

Finally, the wheel has turned full circle in the linking of the Company to its past some four centuries ago, reminding present Liverymen of their forebears. In excess of £40,000 was raised by the Company for the purchase of the entire contents of the Pipe works at Brosely, Ironbridge. These have been displayed in the fully restored factory, which opened in 1995 as a Museum, the same building that all those years ago, provided some of the competition to the original London pipe-makers and giving the impetus for the foundation for the first Company.
